Crazy Fish, Jellies and More!

Welcome to MerFox Art, a place of fantasy and fun! Every Stained Glass Artist has boxes of scrap glass sitting around their studio waiting to be turned into something fun, playful and easy! You might even learn how to teach beginners who want to play with glass but aren't sure about cutting. There's no cutting in this class! We begin by digging out those scraps, picking up a piece and adding to it, adding in pieces one at a time until you can see the vision of something magical. Some scraps say "I'm a fish!" Some say "I'm a Jellyfish!" Some say "I'm a Mermaid!" and some say they are flowers, some whimsical garden art! I start with the basics so even a beginner can do this and finish off with advanced techniques showing you how to add embellishments and do some fancy soldering!

Layering Glass to Create Depth and Texture

How do you bring depth to flat sheets of glass? Elements can be added to it and fused, but it will still remain a flat. A lower temperature firing (Tac fusing) can give you texture but do you have depth? Layering glass sheets brings a dimension to your glass art creating an intriguing image. In this class, you will learn how to layer and fuse glass to obtain depth and texture to an art piece.  Materials in this class will include glass powders, high-fire enamels, glass frit, stringers, glass wafers, stencils and sheet glass.

Encased Reef Beads

Often called aquarium beads, my encased reef beads are a little look into the ocean.  how I make these lovely beads that are like a look into an aquarium or a dive down to the reef.  To make these beads I use glass components called murrini to add little fish, narrow rods of glass called stringers that look like seaweed, coral, anemones and other components.   Dive in with me and I will show you some techniques for applying and encasing all of these components in layers of transparent glass.  Want to take your aquarium on the go?  We'll also make a small bead that can be made into a bracelet or slide right on to your favorite charm bracelet or necklace.

I will show how to fuse the decals into the glass first and then how to incorporate them into a stained glass piece. My methods involve the copper foil method for the body of the panel and the use of lead came as a frame surrounding the piece.
